School Closings & Delays

Hello 

If Waterford Public Schools are closed, opened late, or dismissed early because of bad weather, or other emergencies, Announcements will  be posted on the Waterford Public Schools web site as follows:

  1. in the District Announcements section (on the District's Home Page, upper right),
  2. in the Upcoming Events section of the District and each School home page (lower right section of each home page) and
  3. on the District and School Calendars (calendar icon calendar along the top of each web page).

The closed, opened late, or dismissed early Announcement will also be displayed on a banner on the Waterford Public School Mobile App. Click here for instructions on how to download the WPS Mobile App to your device. 

Waterford Public Schools also offers an automatic notification system to school-aged students/families where participants will receive the announcement via a phone call and/or email message.

In addition, the TV channels and radio stations listed below will be notified and announcements made by these stations. For school closings or late openings, the radio stations and TV channels will be notified by 6:15 a.m.; for early dismissals, the notification will be by 10:15 a.m., if possible.

EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSINGS:

Radio/TV announcements that “Waterford Public Schools are closed” mean: 1) ALL regular classes and programs are cancelled. Also, all scheduled after-school and evening programs are cancelled. (However, if weather or other conditions permit, after-school and evening activities may be rescheduled for that day—such decisions will be announced on the radio stations listed above.) School days cancelled because of bad weather or for other reasons will be made up at the end of the school year. 2) There will be no transportation to out-of-town schools. (Grasso Tech, Norwich Tech, Ledyard Vo-Ag, and all special education transportation including out-of-town programs.)

LATE SCHOOL OPENINGS:

Radio/TV announcements that “Waterford Public Schools will open two hours late” mean also that out-of-town transportation will operate two hours late. Following a late opening (except for further emergencies), students will be dismissed at regular time.

When a two-hour delay is announced, the schedule is as follows: elementary schools: 10:25 a.m. – 3:10 p.m.; middle school: 9:50 a.m. – 2:35 p.m.; high school: 9:25 a.m. – 2:10 p.m.

EARLY DISMISSALS:

Radio/TV announcements will be “Waterford Public Schools will close early.

When an early dismissal is announced, dismissal times are as follows: elementary schools dismiss at 12:25 p.m.; middle school will dismiss at 11:55 a.m.; high school will dismiss at 11:25 a.m. No lunch will be served on early dismissal days.
